Our Verdict

The Naturepedic Organic Cotton Classic 150 Seamless 2-Stage is a high-quality traditional crib mattress that uses 150 inner springs and incorporates wool batting to meet flammability standards. This mattress uses organic cotton and a polyethylene waterproof liner to keep the inner workings clean and dry. This mattress fits well in our test cribs, but sheet changes can be challenging given the heavier weight and slightly larger size. Naturpedic offers a transparent materials list and impressive customer service. There is much to love about the Naturpedic, but it is heavier, and this makes changing sheets a cumbersome operation at best. It is also more expensive than some competitors, but we think it is a worthwhile investment if your budget can swing it.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Naturepedic launched in 2003 with the goal of creating safer and healthier bedding. Naturepedic creates GOTS-certified mattresses that avoid polyurethane foam and flame retardants. Their mattresses are made in the USA and have a 100-night trial guarantee and a warranty for the original purchaser.

Materials

Naturpedic earned an impressive score for materials in our tests.

Naturepedic offers a transparent list of materials on the mattress and its website, making it a breath of fresh air in an industry where more than half of the options withhold the details or are vague. It was the first crib mattress to be Environmental Working Group (EWG) Verified and is Greenguard Gold Certified. It does not use phthalates, vinyl, flame retardants, or polyurethane foam.

The materials used in the Naturpedic are healthier for your baby than polyurethane foam, which off-gasses.

Sheet Changing

The Naturepedic struggled in our test for sheet changes with a lower-than-average score.

The Naturepedic is a heavy mattress with one of the highest weights in the group at 21.1 lbs. Given that sheet changes could be almost daily as your little one grows, it is important to consider if you can lift your chosen mattress.

Its weight and size make it harder to lift up and out of the crib to change the sheets. As the mattress platform gets lower or if one of the parents is shorter, the difficulty increases exponentially. If you have concerns about lifting and manipulating the mattress in the middle of the night, this is an important metric to consider. If the mattress also has a snug fit in your chosen crib, that can make changing sheets even more of a challenge.

The Naturepedic fit well in most of our test cribs.

Crib Fit

While cribs and mattresses should align with a set standard of measurements, variations between the two of up to an inch can result in a pairing that doesn't mesh well.

In our tests, we put each mattress into our favorite cribs. Naturepedic earned a score that was better than average for this metric. In the past, we found this mattress to be on the larger side, and it often didn't fit well in many cribs.

However, something seems to have changed, and it fits well in all of our test cribs with a snug but not too snug fit with smaller gaps that allow it to be lifted for sheet changes but aren't so big as to be a safety concern.

We loved the Naturpedic, and it performed well in most tests, but it is heavy and harder to lift for sheet changes.

Should You Buy the Naturepedic Classic 150 Seamless 2-Stage?

The Naturpedic is one of the few waterproof options in this review. This organic mattress uses cotton and wool with an innerspring design and a food-grade polyethylene film to keep the mattress cleaner. We love many things about this mattress, but it is heavier than most competitors, and its square edges could cause trouble in smaller cribs, though it tested well in our test cribs. Overall, we think it is a great choice for families looking for an innerspring mattress with a design that better aligns with traditional mattresses, but the extra heft and price could have some longing for something different.

What Other Crib Mattresses Should You Consider?

If you like the idea of innerspring but want something slightly lighter, the My Green Mattress Emily Natural is a good choice. Made with similar materials, it is about 2 lbs lighter and has a lower price. If you want something even lighter and are willing to sacrifice natural materials for non-off-gassing polyester, the Babyletto Pure Core with Dry Waterproof Cover is almost half the weight of the Naturpedic and less expensive. Both mattresses fit easily in our test cribs. If you want a washable mattress that is also lightweight, the Newton Original is a unique mattress that can be washed in the shower, making it a clean option that doesn't require waterproofing.
